Taylor Alexander Locke was born on August 5, 1984. He has been playing a stringed instrument since he was four, and first saw a ukulele in a guitar shop with his parents. He entered the acting world in 1994*, at the age of 9, garnering a part in a movie about a cop investigating the murders of high class hookers (an instant classic). After this early acting success he went for really arty dramas, and in 1999 his next, and last, two movies came out. They both dealt with kids trapped in old west towns, but there is a difference between the two. One has zombies in this old town, and the other has aliens. The academy shamefully overlooked these cinematic gems, though, and Taylor was already in a band a this time. Toasty Pillow! This band is featured in the zombie movie, and plays two songs, Never Trust a Lizard, and Nourishers (Lyrics). They wear sparkly coats, and rock out at a party.

Thankfully in November of that year he decided to help Robert Carmine (then Schwartzman) put together a band. Robert and Taylor went to different schools but apparently had a crush on the same girl at the time. After the dispute over the girl was settled (meaning she didn't want either of them) they both realized that despite the fact that they were two years apart they shared a common appriciation for good music. Even though Taylor was already in Toasty Pillow at the time, he agreed to help Robert, who up to then had been writing music alone in his basement, form a band. They chose, Matt Star who was a really good jazz guitarist, Matt Winter, who was in Robert's class, and was suggested to them by mutual friends, and Teddy Briggs, who was a good jazz drummer, but more importantly in full Rooney tradition, had "cool hair". This was the birth of the band we love and call Rooney.

With this line up they needed some place to practice, and decided on Taylor's garage, which he fixed up using his bar mitzvah money, turning it into a studio. After practicing for less than a month they put out a three song demo, with Blueside, Someone's Watching, and Turn Away on it. Robert's brother Jason Schwartzman of Phantom Planet listened to it, and showed it to the rest of the Phantom Planet guys. They liked it, and invited them to open for them at a concert. Less than a month after they were formed they had a gig opening for an established band.

There was one problem though, they hadn't come up with a name for the band. Robert decided on Ed Rooney, the name of the dean in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, thinking that they could change it later. On December 17, 1999 Ed Rooney took the stage, and blew away the audience of Phantom Planet fans. Soon they found that they had quite a fan base, and changing the name would be hard. This line up recorded another demo, called Deli Meats, with 5 tracks (Meltdown, Turn Away, Blueside, Find Myself, and Losing All Control). In July of 2000, though, Teddy Briggs decided to leave the band for personal reasons, and Ned Brower, a friend of Robert's brother, took his place. Also when Teddy left, the band decided to drop the Ed part of Ed Rooney, and became just Rooney.

A year later they recorded another demo, called Plug it In, with The Floor, Why?, It Goes to Bed, and No Wait but Listen I'm Talking to You (AKA Gone!). In May of 2001 Matt Star left the band, (he has now just joined Addison, another really really great band). Because at the time Robert was doing vocals, guitar, and keyboards, they decided to get a classmate of Taylor's to join the band as keyboardist, Louie Stephens.

This is the line up of Rooney that we know and love today. Taylor, Ned, Robert, Matt, and Louie. They put out one last demo Mastedonia, with If it Were Up to Me, Popstars, and Losing All Control, before signing up with Geffen Records.

Rooney has toured with Weezer, The Strokes, The Donnas, and Pete Yorn. On May 20 2003 their first full length album was released, called Rooney. They have just finished their first headlining tour across the country.

Note the difference, I think Robert's humming would get a little grating if it happened for all of Taylor's solos.
